Abstract: | It is often argued that developing countries that pursue export-oriented trade policies have better economic performance than those adopting import-substitution policies. To date, most empirical studies of this issue have used aggregate economy-wide data and provide mixed evidence on the linkage between export-orientation and productivity growth. In this paper, the authors follow the framework of Bernard and Wagner (1997) to address three main questions: (1) Are there any major differences in characteristics and performance between exporters and non-exporters? (2) Are there productivity differentials before the plants enter the export market? (3) Do plants improve their productivity after they enter the export market? |
