Abstract: | The 1980's were a decade of remarkable economic progress for women. After a decade of hovering in the low 60 % , the ratio of female to male median hourly earnings took off in the 1980s, increasing by more than one percentage point per year to reach 75% in 1991. In this paper, the authors argue that there is a close connection between distributional wage changes between men and women. The fact that during the 1980s male wage dispersion increased while gender gap decreased could be seen just as a coincidence. |
