Abstract:The author explains how a variation on the first-track management development scheme can fill the senior-level skills gaps created by downsizing and traditional approaches to successful planning. The overwhelming majority of UK firms want to fill 80 per cent or more of their senior management positions with internal candidates yet few are coming near that goal. Companies report that downsizing has left them with few middle managers, too many of whom are lacking the competencies and experience necessary to run a third-millennium company.
