Abstract:Communism's fall has created a new era of dynamic party competition in Central and Eastern Europe. Scholars of post-communist party systems have focused on the ideological and electoral cleavages, finding that party members and voters distinguish between the parties along economic lines, with secondary factors also influencing these party distinctions, for example religion, ethnicity and nationalism. To this point, however there has been little investigation of whether or not these partisan variations lead to diverse policy outcomes.
