Abstract:In this paper the authors take Belgium as an example of a country where the business and investment environment differs significantly from Anglo-Saxon models. Belgium, for example, has a lower proportion of publicly-traded companies and therefore the relationship between companies' management and its major investors tends to be close and strong. However the number of external directors on Belgian boards is more in line with US companies than with those in the UK. The research discussed in this paper isolates a sample of 122 Belgian companies, listed and unlisted and of all sizes, to study their board composition and the relationship between that and company performance, as measured by return on equity and assets.
