Abstract:Globalization has many powerful defenders, such as ex- president Clinton and most of Wall Street, but numerous dissenters as well, including many prominent environmentalists, some outspoken critics on the left such as French prime minister Lionel Jospin and Ralph Nader, and a few from the populist right such as Patrick Buchanan, perennial presidential candidate. The author asks - why there should be so much unease - perhaps "widely shared anxiety" would be a better phrase - over a global phenomenon that has rapidly transformed many economies, especially since the surprising economic collapse of the Soviet Union and its Eastern European satellites.
