Abstract:This article focuses on the organizational changes occurring in Italian cultural institutions. It argues that, because of the rapid changes taking place in the public sector generally, the tradition of cultural activities being offered solely by state-owned agencies is no longer sustainable. The authors discuss the future role of not- for-profit organizations in the Italian cultural sector by focusing on the transformation of one public agency, Trento's Centro Servizi Culturali S. Chiara, into an "open" foundation - a not-for-profit organization run jointly by government, entrepreneurs and individual citizens. They point out that this type of foundation, which is emerging throughout Italy, can be an effective means of reviving institutions and spurring cultural activity.
