Abstract:Exploratory research in industrial materials science involves knowledge-building leading to novel materials and processes. Initial applications envisioned by the researcher are seldom successful. Nevertheless, this research often yields important competitive advantages as new opportunities emerge. The time lag involved, however, creates issues for technical managers in the encouragement and rewarding of those who excel in this "fuzzy front end" of the innovation cycle. Long experience at Corning, however, clearly demonstrates that the development of landmark new products is almost always dependent on knowledge gleaned from previous exploratory research.
