ANALYTICAL REVIEW

Abstract:A paradox envelops East-Central Europe's (ECE) quest to join the European community: the more intense the negotiations process and the more proximate the entry, the more public opinion in many candidate countries shifts away from extensive support for EU membership to relatively guarded approval. At the beginning of the 1990s decade, when the issue first surfaced, there was overwhelming mass support for the idea of East European integration with the Western community. Most fundamental to the author's analysis of public opinion trends in Poland is the decline in positive assessment of EU enlargement across the board, touching all major societal sectors.
