Abstract: | The concept of sustainability is increasingly gathering support in production companies as a tool for long-term viability and corporate responsibility. To facilitate the planning and implementation of sustainability, many companies are investigating foresighting and backcasting as techniques that will allow them to understand, model and formulate the future to their advantage. This paper discusses the possible role of soft systems methodology (SSM) in sustainable production planning. As a qualitative operations research tool, SSM is designed to analyse and model complex systems that integrate technology with human and organisational systems. |
