Abstract: | The author estimated productivity growth using a structural model of production, accounting for unobserved heterogeneity in technology and productivity. Using the estimation results, he investigates the trends underlying the large increase in aggregate labour productivity growth for the industry since the early 1980's. Plant-level growth, attributed mostly to lean producers, and the net entry of plants with the new technology are the two most important components of aggregate productivity growth. |
