| Abstract: | Ordinarily salvage value and tourism expenditures have been the most important economic values. This article focuses on another alternative, the non-market value generated by managing shipwrecks as submerged maritime cultural resources. Using a contingent valuation method it is found that households in North Carolina are willing to pay on average $35 in a one-time increase in state taxes. |
