| Abstract: | In this article, using bank archives and parliamentary reports, the authors examine the corporate governance mechanisms of nineteenth century Irish joint-stock banks which were characterized by a relatively diffused ownership and a separation of ownership from control. This article examines how well shareholders, as well as depositors and note-holders, were protected from expropriation. |
