Abstract:This article discusses the widely accepted concept of social capital (Putnam 2000) and how it has been incorporated into a body of leisure studies literature. The critique concentrates on some key points from Putnam's work and then it is extended to encompass the methodological and theoretical underpinnings of his approach and its link to civic communitarianism. Putnam's conception of social capital doesn't take into account that poorer community groups tend to be at the mercy of forces they cannot control (Bourdieu). The writers suggest that it might be worthwhile to formulate a key interpretive role for community leisure practitioners- recast as cultural intermediaries- if poorer citizens are to be better included.
