Abstract:The paper examines how distinctive artists shield their idiosyncratic styles from the isomorphic pressures of a field by drawing upon the cases of three European film directors - Pedro Almodóvar, Nanni Moretti and Lars von Trier. The claim is that filmmakers must drive for optimal distinctiveness in the counterpressure of artistic ambition and business motives. The theory suggests that movie directors increase their control by consolidating artistic and production roles, forming partnerships with producers and establishing their own production companies.
