Abstract:This paper introduces a structural model to examine key factors on residents' perceptions of the impacts of the 2002 Winter Olympics as a mega tourism event and what kind of impact these perceptions have on their support. Community backing for events is influenced by five determinants of support: the level of community concern, ecocentric values, community attachment, perceived benefits and perceived costs. Cost and benefit factors have strong interaction, and support relies heavily on perceived benefits rather than costs.
