Abstract:This study aims to illustrate the theoretical and empirical complexity of the relation btw. technological capability (here as: t-cap.) and firm performance and explain why the use of different measures (as: msrs.) can lead to dramatically different results. Analyzed is the t-cap.-performance relation in 201 large U.S. public manufacturing companies. Used indicators for t-cap. are a variety of patent statistics and a measure of research & development (R&D) intensity. The following six measures as follows: return on (as: r-o.) assets, r-o. equity, r-o. sales, market value, market value added (as: v-a.), and economic v-a. The results vary substantially, depending on which msrs. are used for the (in)dependent variables.
