Abstract:Since the beginning of 21st century, politicians, scholars and journalists want more accountable and transparent news media. The Netherlands have introduced newspaper ombudsman as an accountability function in the newsroom. Open-ended interviews and a questionnaire directed to Dutch ombudsmen showed two views of the function: on the one hand, they regard themselves as readers' advocates, whose loyalty lies with the reader, and on the other hand, they are the newspapers' ambassadors who defend the paper's interests. It was found out that the ombudsman can be seen as and accountability mechanism, or as a way to strengthen the newspaper's relationship with its readers.
