Abstract:The paper discusses clustering within the context of new product development and clustering as a step in the process of diverging and converging. In general view it is seen as part the converging stages, as a selection technique, which the paper does not agree on. Four kinds of clustering are distinguished, which are object clustering, morphological clustering, functional clustering, and gestalt clustering. General guidelines for clustering are also presented: use a bottom-op process of emergence, postpone early rationalizations and verbalizations, start grouping ideas on the basis of feeling and intuition, and use metaphoric names to identify clusters.
