Abstract: | This paper examines the effect of interdependence on estimation and interpretation of earnings/labour supply (here as: lb-s.) equations. Considered are the cases of 1. a positive spillover from others' labour supplied (as: lb-sd.) and 2. a need for conformity with others' lb-sd. Qualitative and quantitative comparative statics results with a Stone-Geary utility function demonstrate how spillover effects increase lb-s. uniformly. Alternatively, conformity effects move ld-sd. toward the mean of the reference group so that, in the limit, lb-s. becomes perfectly inelastic at the reference group average etc. |
