Abstract:In this study the authors develop a model of farming, hunting and defensive action to examine the economic and environmental effects of introducing a program to compensate peasants of a small economy for the damage caused by wildlife. Findings of this study suggest that the common belief that compensation encourages wildlife conservation may be erroneous. The authors suggest that compensation can actually lessen the wildlife stock and can result in a net welfare loss for locals.
