Abstract:This paper systematically explores the contrasting effects of strategic determinants on rent generation (henceforth as: r-genr.) and rent appropriation (here as: r-appr.) using the entire population of French biotech firms from 1994 to 2002. It is found that science and money do not unconditionally go together. The direct relationship btw. rent-accruing resources (e.g. patents or articles) and r-appr. varies depending on the type of resources and the strategic orientation. In addition, the effects of strategic determinants differ for r-genr. vs. r-appr. Based on the evidence, the emergence in the biotechnology industry of a 'one-best' strategic trajectory is challenged.
