Abstract:This paper advanced debate on environmental assessment (hereafter as: e-asmt.) by examining the theoretical implications of an empirical analysis of its causal operation in selected cases. The derived causal models illustrate the diversity of mechanisms through which e-asmt. can contribute to sustainability, providing an insight into the complexity and contextuality of causation. The findings also highlight a multiplicity of societal expectations concerning e-asmt.'s contribution to sustainable development. It is concluded that the interplay of non-rational variables requires the pursuit of a reflexive accommodation of purposes, methods and context in e-asmt. practices.
