Abstract:In order to contribute to the literature on board effectiveness, this article explores how the nature of outside directors' prior experience, and resulting expertise (here as: expt.), will influence the performance of a focal firm's (here as: f-f.'s ) strategic initiatives. Based on a conceptual framework, it is found that directors will develop expt. in making particular kinds of acquisition (as: acq./acqs.) decisions using their past experiences ... about specific types of acqs. This experience and expt. is predicted to have positive effects on the performance of a f-f.'s acqs. This study's theoretical model is extended to consider the conditions under which relevant director experience will prove most beneficial etc.
