Abstract:The study explores the relationship btw. succession (henceforth as: succn/s.) and firm performance. Using a non-parametric matching approach on a panel of about 4,000 Austrian family firms, the impact of actual (past) succn/s. as well as planned (future) succn/s. on employment growth (here as: e-g.) is evaluated. Analysing succn/s. plans, there is found no significant difference in e-g. btw. firms planning to transfer the firm in the next 10 years and those firms who do not. In contrast, past succn/s. exerts a significant and positive e-g. effect, getting stronger over time.
