Abstract:A popular way to raise money for charities is auctions. This study performs field experiments to see which sealed bid format, 1st price, 2nd price or all-pay, raises the most money. The experiment suggests that both the all-pay and 2nd price formats are dominated by the 1st price auction. Differential participation is identified as the source of the difference btw. existing theory and the field.
