Abstract:This paper uses a strategy-as-practice perspective on the study of strategy (henceforth as: str.) tools and the theory-practice gap in strategic management (here as: mgmt.) research. Based on a case study, it is argued that differences in epistemic culture may complicate communication and co-operation btw. academics and practitioners. These differences may also result in mgmt. scholars producing knowledge and str. tools without practical pertinence for corporate actors etc. In post-bureaucratic knowledge organizations (PBOs), where flexibility, participative mgmt. style and consensus building dialogue are highlighted, modernist str. tools designed for rational problem solving by individual decision-makers may not be sufficient. Overall, it is concluded that the development of str. tools actually supporting practical strategizing calls for a more social model of knowledge and str. work.
