Abstract:In this article it is shown that under certain conditions, succeeding in the American Idol contest dependent on contestant's popularity and not her singing talent or performance, could increase aggregate singing effort. The author suggests that it may be optimal to give entire voting power to the viewers of the show whose evaluation of singing effort is "noisier".
