Abstract:Based on data from a Spanish database, this study explores the role of persistence (hereafter as: prst.) in the decision of firms to implement product and process innovations (herein as: innv/s.) and to develop these innv/s. It is assumed that a company being continuously dedicated to some type of innv/s. activity will be encouraged to innovate, either for investment reasons or in order to enhance its market image. Due to the effects of prst. (state dependence) could be contaminated by unobserved heterogeneity, panel data is used. These effects are aimed to be separated. It is shown that prst. is important in both innv/s. decisions. Prst. in innv/s. increases at least 15 percent the probability (here as: prb-ty.) to develop more innv/s. In addition, the introduction of the alternative innv/s. increases the prb-ty. for innv/s. from 2 to 4 percent. This implies the complementarities btw. innv/s. also being of importance in the decision to continue innv/s. as to the capacities and absorbed synergies produced by the firm.
