Abstract:This paper examines the impact of in-house R&D and innovation (herein as: innvn.) management practices on innvn. success in small and medium-sized firms (SMEs). It is analysed whether a certain strategy can be worthwhile. Based on data from the German Community Innovation Survey (CIS), R&D activities are found to be a main driver for innvn. success if combined with external R&D, using external innvn. sources or by entering into co-operation agreements. SMEs without in-house R&D can yield a similar innvn. success in case they effectively apply human resource management (HRM) tools or team work to ease innvn. processes.
