Abstract:The combination of technology and globalization, consumerism and "ideal work norms" are among explanations offered to explain the employees' longer and longer work hours. This article proposes that these trends may be reinforced by extended work hours cultures, created by processes of recruitment and selection, employee self-selection, cultural socialization and reward systems. It is further argued that the number organizations with extended work hours cultures is increasing and that this kind of companies tend to reinforce the effect by recruiting individuals that have a tendency for workaholism. To disentangle this problem, the authors propose spiritual leadership of organizational transformation to prevent the negative effects of extended work hours culture.
