Abstract: | The paper investigates how films project the image and attributes of a tourist destination, and promise a possible experience for potential visitors, focusing on the Australian Outback. An analysis of 22 fictional-feature films set and filmed in the Outback is conducted. The findings indicate some strong patterns in these films. Almost all of the films represented the Outback through the eyes of a person who was making their first trip to the area. Most of these films showed that the person visiting Outback was profoundly changed after the experience. Accordingly, the paper argues that through films, the key promise to tourists traveling to the Outback is that they will have profound life-changing experiences. |
