Abstract: | Many acquirers are likely to come out poorly in the present wave of mergers. Several factors determine the success of a merger, not the least being timing and the ability to manage the target well after it has been bought. Yet there is a serious risk that, when potential targets are viewed, the most optimistic viewer will become the buyer. This risk can be cut significantly by remembering the following guidelines: avoid acquiring companies about which you have no greater information than other companies do; take advantage of imperfect information among potential acquirers; consider the tax benefits; watch for companies which are unnoticed or underpriced in the marketplace; find companies which are worth more to your company than to any others. |
