Abstract:The starting-point for management are the determinants of performance. They influence profit either directly i.e. operatively, or indirectly. The most important determinant of performance is the selection of the markets, which is a strategic choice. A hierarchical system of success factors is developed and it is analyzed how and to which extent management can influence these determinants. Primary, secondary and derivative determinants of success are distinguished. The primary success determinants depend on performance of the individual. The competitive position and the market opportunity of an enterprise as secondary success determinants influence the distribution, the returns and the configuration of costs.
