Abstract:Environmental effects on the internal workings of the marketing channel are discussed. The literature on channel environments are reviewed. Environmental munificence effects on the nature of the interdependencies exchange relations are summarized. It is argued that within the channel bureaucratic governance affects the quality of the channel relationship. Five rich and five lean macroenvironments are selected and examined. The hypothesized effects are tested in a model using a full- information maximum likelihood approach. The most dramatic consequences of environmental munificence are its negative effects on the supplier's tendency to centralize and formalize relations with dealers.
