Abstract:Several oil-exporting less developed nations are still very poor and have relatively small oil reserves, and most of them have an abundance of other major energy resources. Oil exports offer a means of obtaining the foreign exchange so instrumental to economic development. One way is to expand the utilization of other indigenous fossil fuel resources, such as coal or natural gas, that have relatively low export potential. These fuels can be substituted for oil in many domestic production processes, thereby extending the life of exportable reserves. The potential for substituting coal for oil in the Indonesian economy is examined, in order to set in motion the chain of export, foreign exchange reinvestment, and productive activities needed to stimulate development.
