Abstract:Effective problem-solving in R/D is more likely to be the result of cultural orientation than of "techniques". The importance of team building and team participation is emphasized. The continuum from data-based, systematic problem analysis to creative problem solving (brainstorming) is described. Some comparisons are made between the different approaches. The steps of the group discussion process of systematic problem solving are listed and characterized. The relevance of creative problem-solving approaches to R/D is shown, especially for the case when the researches are interested in new and previously unexplored possibilities. Otherwise the right expert can simply direct the group to the solution.
