Abstract:As relative fuel prices change, the attractiveness of biofuels and fossil fuels to different sectors of the economy alters significantly. Over the past decade, intense interest in biofuel use in developing countries has followed the roller coaster of oil prices. Many questions still remain regarding actual financial and economic performance of these fuels. Sectoral differences between biofuel and fossil fuels with regard to production costs, economies of scale, subsidies, and other economic incentives in developing countries are explored. The specific cost structures and macroeconomic impacts exhibited by biofuel systems often contrast significantly with those associated with fossil fuel systems.
