Abstract:The types and patterns of messages in dyadic manager-subordinate relationships are examined in two manufacturing plants. One plant reflects an organic philosophy and has self-managing teams, the other represents a mechanistic philosophy with a traditional, authority-based approach to management. Using a relational control coding scheme to analyze and compare interactions, results suggest that organic systems involve more two-way communication and conversational elaboration, more managerial information and advice than orders and decisions, and generally, a style resembling consultation rather than command. Competitive interchanges and one-up transitory interchanges were more likely to appear at the traditional plant, indicating competitiveness.
