Abstract:To achieve the target production for a period, the planner is given freedom in setting the daily production rate. A model is presented to assist in optimizing this rate. The oil output is accompanied by the production of gas. When there is a restriction in the gas pipeline, the planner has three choices of action, namely: to flare the excess gas to waste, to invoke the agreement governing the use of the pipeline by taking a larger percentage of the available capacity, or to reduce the production rate. The usefulness of integrating the concept of stochastic dynamic programming into an interactive computer model as a means of optimizing the production rate for an offshore oil field is shown.
