Abstract:Employees more and more are entitled to select their own package of benefits. Recent increases in the cost of fringe benefits pose a significant challenge to employers. They seldom offer their employees meaningful assistance in decision making. Now, however, advances in artifical intelligence have resulted in expert systems that run on PCs. Properly programmed, these systems can help employees to make the optimum benefits selection, and also help employers with benefits administration. The motivation for flexible benefits plans is highlighted. The seven steps necessary while adapting flexible benefits plans to expert systems are described. A sample expert system program is presented.
