Abstract:More American R and D (research and development) laboratories should consider implementing multifunctional teamwork at the mid-stage of the technology life cycle. Japanese R and D employees engage in more multifunctional teamwork than their American counterparts. One reason of why Japanese companies are successful in introducing new products is that they use a team approach. In contrast to Japan, many American firms attempt to develop new products using a bureaucratically programmed approach. The American approach has succeeded in generating new technologies, while a strong point of Japanese industry has been the implementation of incremental improvements.
