Abstract:Presentation of a framework integrating two approaches to explain how multinational enterprises select ownership structures for subsidiaries, related to transaction costs of doing business abroad and negotiations that depend on the bargaining power of the firm. Ownership trade-offs and negotiation. Ownership preferences and concessions. Deadlocked negotiations. Separating effects on preferences and bargaining. Estimating ownership effects, entry effects, the sample and variables. How government ownership restrictions deter firm entry and how those with high intra-system sales are deterred. Three Tables illustrate the study.
