Abstract:In the North Sea there are more than 30 oil and gas platforms with staffs of 100 to 200. It is highly important to provide these isolated places with reliable communications. In the 1970s tropospheric scatters were used but they required high-power transmitters and high-gain antennas. BTI developed a satellite communication service for offshore platforms called Sat-Stream Offshore operating in the Ku band. The system works unmanned, it is controlled from the Aberdeen centre. Such a satellite service operates in Balmoral.
