Abstract:In spite of the fact that Australia does not lack innovative people, short-term thinking, material comfort and lack of concern for basic research has meant that many cultural and commercial opportunities have been lost. This is in contrast to successes of some Asian Pacific nations whose mentality is characterized by long-term thinking. Solar energy and renewables comprise one area of technological change where Australia, one of the sunniest countries on the planet, could have excelled, yet it is one in which it has failed dismally. The need to develop more efficient ways of producing and utilizing energy provides a chance to put creativity and enterprise to constructive use.
