| Abstract: | For many years countertrade was associated mainly with East-West trade. But it spread to North-South and South- North trade in the early 1980s and now it is taking on new and more complex forms. Industrial compensation has become more important than commercial compensation. The former takes the form of buy-backs or offsets. Developing countries regard offsets as a means of more rapid industrialisation. Joint ventures often have a buy-back element. |
