Abstract:What can organizations learn from a rock singer who helped to mobilize aid to Ethiopia? It is shown that what Bob Geldof achieved and the way he did it provide insight into the new challenges facing strategic managers. In a study of 50 Australian chief executive officers it was found that strategic managers no longer are the rational analysts of a few years ago; they are managers of vision, of mission, of identity, of culture. They are managers of meaning. They face the same essential problem confronted by Geldof: cutting across loosely coupled, autonomous individuals and groups and getting them to collaborate toward a common goal. Some important characteristics of the Geldof era are examined and new managerial competencies are explained.
