Abstract:Global corporations organize their operations around integrated economic regions, not just national markets. That is why 35 per cent of the largest 1500 USA companies are looking into Eastern Europe. The reasons are a hundred million potential customers, reasonably skilled low-cost workers, and a favourable political environment. But USA companies should be looking instead into Mexico. Unlike Eastern Europeans, Mexican workers have a genuine understanding of the routines of market capitalism. Mexican companies compete on advanced technology, not only on cheap labor. Since 1988 foreign companies have invested some 80 billion USD in the country. It will take years of work and much capital to develop Mexico.
