Abstract:A new demand model for an 11-good system was used to fit International Comparison Project /ICP/ data for 57 high-, middle- and low-income countries in 1970, 1975 and 1980. Income elasticities of demand for total energy for 51 countries in 1980 were all greater than unitary with the poorest having an estimate of near 1.4. This evidence suggests that unitary income elasticity of demand for energy may be too small and is more in the range of 1.35 as suggested by others. Own-price elasticities of demand for total energy were also larger than the 'consensus' values, being near unitary for low-income countries and between -0.8 and -0.9 for all others. It is also demonstrated that income and price elasticities of demand for total energy differ among countries.
