Abstract:A new model of railroad operations which is a direct outgrowth of technological advances in this industry is presented. The model addresses the problem of fuel savings while maintaining reliability by satisfying time windows on the departure and arrival times of the trains. The new techniques provide a train dispatcher with the capability to improve the operations of a rail line by pacing trains over a territory. It permits trains to travel at less than maximum velocity to minimize fuel consumption while maintaining a given level of performance. A mathematical programming model for the pacing problem and alternative solutions for this model are described, the new model is compared to traditional procedures.
